Posted - 26 Nov 2008 : 19:42:35 I submitted an article and photos to the ANT on Sunday about the U9's in the NLD Qualifiers and nothing gets printed. I suppose it's understandable though, there can't be much space left after including 17 junior football reports!
I feel a sternly worded email coming on. Pls feel free to send your own complaint to the ANT (editorial@ashbournenewstelegraph.co.uk). |

"Thanks for your email. I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments. But that's in a perfect world. The facts are rather different, I'm afraid. When I start work at 8am on a Monday morning I have upwards of 18 pages shouting at me to be filled before 4pm on Tuesday. That's a lot of work for one person. Consequently, it's one frantic flurry to shovel the sports reports into the available pages by mid-afternoon on Monday. In general, it's first come-first served and the two junior rugby reports arrived behind Aztecs, Mayfield Panthers plus the more senior teams.
The good news is I have a slightly more leisurely period on Friday and Saturday to edit the junior rugby stories for next week's paper. A week late, I know, but at least I can do a more thorough job on them.
I hope this goes some small way to explaining why reports don't always get in. Kind regards Clown Shoes"
....No real mention of the article being sent to the wrong email address neither, strange!
It also made me smile that he seemed to be pouring his heart out to me about the difficulties in pulling all the files/reports/photos together against a deadline....
....You're a journalist you clown- it's sort of your job!!

Posted - 27 Nov 2008 : 18:26:27 Promising response or a weak and feeble excuse for reacting to what is in front of him rather than what might actually be newsworthy. I would offer to assist in this with reports etc but I can't spell in northern. Hopefully this is a foot in the door so I think there needs to be a prize for the first person to get on the front page. For a good, rugby related reason that is Tomituous!

Posted - 27 Nov 2008 : 18:09:54 I've had a response to my complaint... We used the wrong email address apparently (only been using this particular email address for about 5 years!).
I'm so sorry we disappointed you and the lads by not printing the match report and picture. You did everything right . . . except one thing. The email went to editorial rather than this email address.
Although it reached me mid-morning on Monday (the reporters are inundated with emails every morning and Monday is particularly heavy), by that time it was way down the queue behind all the other reports which flooded in over the weekend (some reports are submitted only hours after the final whistles on Saturday). In addition, the sports section was restricted to five instead of six pages this week.
My heavy page schedule dictates that I have to have all sport out of the way before 3pm on Monday afternoon, so it really is a case of shovelling it through like a manic conveyor belt.
If we can gain one positive out of this, it is that I will have time tomorrow to edit the report early in time for next week's edition.
The pictures are good. If you could supply me with names I could perhaps use some of them in future reports when those in the frame do something exceptional.

Posted - 27 Nov 2008 : 10:22:39 What I have sent.....
"Whilst I do enjoy a good read of the weekly edition of the ANT I do feel that not all areas of the town's sporting prowess are done justice. I largely am referring to the absence of articles regarding the Ashbourne Rugby Club. As a playing member I am more than aware that we as a club should be making it business as usual to submit match reports and this is something we are looking to amend.
However I am aware that this week an article along with photos was submitted for publication yet it was not included. The article which I am referring to was in relation to the under 9’s recent success at a qualifying round of the Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire cup. Where as I can understand the occasional run of the mill match report having to make way for other articles I feel that due to this involving the junior element of the club and it’s successes against regional opponents this surely should have taken precedent? (Especially in light of the articles that were published).
I’m not one to complain and to be honest I don’t really enjoy doing so but I feel the sports section of the newspaper should be better organised and proportioned so that all sporting teams get a fairer amount of coverage. Considering the numbers of people involved in all of Ashbourne’s sporting and recreational clubs surely by ensuring that there is a more even coverage of all it can only result in an increased circulation, would you not agree?"

But is he brave enough to take it on?? |

Posted - 26 Nov 2008 : 22:33:23 After this week, the 'coaching reins' will be handed over to Pegasus Thrust (more than ably assisted by cascita) to show what he can do for 3 weeks or so (including matches vs Ashby and Leek)... enjoy! |

Posted - 26 Nov 2008 : 22:18:12 Plus I might add that the U9's only got through due to the expert training from Pegasus Thrust, not that other guy that passes every now and then!!!!!! |

Posted - 26 Nov 2008 : 22:15:35 "Local man short-changed at newsagents"....not an unusual article to be featured.
It is extremely poor that a club that fields 4 teams and a massive junior section doesn't get hardly any coverage. When I am doing sod all at work tomorrow the football obsessed clowns will get something from me.
However having said that in fairness not all of the teams submit team reports so we are partially to blame. For example some chap came down to watch the 3's on Saturday and took photos and he clearly looked like it was for newspaper purposes- yet there was b****r all in the paper.....probably because no-one wrote a report?!?!?!? |
