The driving play of Ashbourne forwards pressured Derby into loose clearance kicks which allowed Riley to feed Glover bursting down the wing, the touch judge brought him back for a foot in touch but the pattern for Ashbourne’s first quarter had been set.

Derby seemed surprised by the Ashbourne forwards physicality as they punched several holes in the defence before the ball was moved swiftly away for Clarke-Kellow to score to the left of the posts.

From the resulting kick-off the ball was again forced back into Derby territory, when the attack appeared to have stalled Taylor slipped away quick ball to Farr whose clever chip was brilliantly picked up by Glover to score.

Further pressure allowed Haswell & Francis to disrupt a lineout; again Taylor moved the ball away quickly to the backs and Farr scored. 15-Nil and all three tries scored in an almost identical position.

Derby then used their rucking game to exert pressure on Ashbourne, the defence seemed to hold but a sharp move from a ruck allowed the Derby wing to escape for a converted try. Derby’s substitutes brought fresh energy & on the stroke of half time their centre crashed over for a second converted try.

With the change of referee at half time came an emphasis on the offside rule & Ashbourne began to give away penalties. Derby used this possession to gain a territorial advantage but was then shocked to see Glover break away and score.

Ashbourne continued to give away technical penalties resulting in a Derby forward pouncing on a loose line out ball to claim another converted try. Despite Ashbourne’s 4 tries Derby successful kicks had put them one point ahead at 20-21.

There was no panic from Ashbourne they moved up field again driving Derby back onto their own line, their high clearance kick was gathered by Riley who carved his way back to the line to score on the right.

Calmly Ashbourne closed out the game to seal the win by a single score.

These were two well matched and committed teams watched in warm sunshine by knowledgeable and encouraging supporters from both sides. It was an absolute pleasure to be there.

Ashbourne Team:

Redfern, Hudson, Beresford, Haswell, Francis, Richmond, Tylee-Peatfield, Donnelly, Taylor, Farr, Holland, Clarke-Kellow, Wakeman, Glover, Riley, Ditchfield, O’Hallan-Brown.

22/03/2009 - Under 12s 63 - Derby B 0 (01 Apr 2009 12:41:02)

Ashbourne Under-12s — 63 Derby B Under-12s — 0

ASHBOURNE ran riot last week with a nine-try feast of open running rugby which left the home supporters breathless.

Playing with confidence, the hosts made every effort to pass the ball out wide to Glover and Lees, the two flying wingers.

This positive open style of play soon gave just rewards when after three minutes Woods burst through the Derby defence spinning out of the tackle to score. The try was converted by Nash to make it 7-0.

From the restart Beard, solid at full-back, ran the ball into the Derby defence to set up for the Ashbourne forwards to secure possession, with Millward and Tynan rampant as usual.

After getting to just 10 metres from the try line, Ashbourne were sure to score but ill discipline at the breakdown gifted Derby a penalty which they kicked back into Ashbourne’s half, to gain the throw in at the ensuing lineout.

Good work from Bailey in the line, supported well by Hulme and Orton, gained possession for the next drive forward.

Glover popped up off his wing, collected the ball from Yates, and ran 30 metres, jinking left then right and finally going round the full-back to score the first of his two tries, converted by Nash.

Lees scored in the corner after quick handling from Bott and Wroe. Then four minutes later Lees scored his second try, both converted by Nash, making the score 21-0.

Ashbourne continued to dominate in every phase of play which provided Glover the opportunity to score his second try, which he did with ease to make the half-time score 35-0.

Ashbourne kicked off the second half, soon regaining possession, and after some good interplay between Lees and Beard, the latter scored a well-earned try, converted by Nash.

Minutes later after hard work again by the forwards, No. 8 Tynan scored a well-deserved try, converted by Nash, making the score now 49-0.

Good handling from the backs then saw Woods stretch his legs to run 20 metres again spinning out of tackles to step inside and score his second converted try.

The final try came after a good run by Nash who, held up five metres out was driven over the line to score, which rounded off a brilliant team performance to make the final score 63-0.

Man of the match went to Barney Glover for a very impressive all round performance.

Photos from Under 9s NLD Final (31 Mar 2009 09:02:20)

There are 1 replies, with the last one on 31 Mar 2009 at 09:02:20 by arufc

Code of Conduct (07 Mar 2009 18:41:32)

There are 5 replies, with the last one on 07 Mar 2009 at 18:41:32 by rachsalt

Vive Le Dobbin!
