Gentlemen,
If there ever was a topic to respond to then this is the one. Having a 5th XV is a fantastic thing but at what cost?
It's nice to say that we are able to put out 5 teams but costs if we are honest are felt across the club.
Please discuss..............

Being able to put out 5 teams is a great thing, especially when it means you get to be in a photo of Townsend banging one out. But we have to be realistic and not overstretch ourselves.
My understanding is that last minute dropouts were the cause of yesterday's problems. Was it too late to drop the 5ths' game and have a decent 4ths and some subs for the 3rds? |

It was embarassing to a representative of ARUFC yesterday at stoke, turning up with 9 men...sorry 10 men...although 1 claimed to have no boots then when was given a pair of boots to play in said "oooh actually i have a bad shoulder", having to pay them for the use of their colts kit cause someone decided to go home and take the kit with them cause couldnt find the ground with the attitude of "**** them", and them having to phone round all their mates to scrat together players for us to try and get a game.
While its great to be a club fielding 5 senior sides and a massive achievement, if it has to be at the expense of all the other teams and risking making us look like a bunch of amateurs id rather not be involved.
I also think if a person has been lucky enough to be elected captain or vice captain of a team, regardless of what level it is that they should stay with that team and fulfil their duties and not play for other teams. |

Why did that person go home? even in the event of having a half plausible excuse surely the decent thing regards the kit would be sorted? or someone would be phoned etc?....in order to avoid letting down (nearly) 30 players!

| god knows why that person went home, maybe because he's a c**k! Not only did he take with him the shirts but also one of the other players who couldnt do anything about it! he shouldnt be allowed to play for ashbourne again. |

Morning Gents,
Your absolutly right it was a properly c**p weekend and we (and me in particular) need to give some serious thought as to how we accomodate 70-75 players all (alledgedly) wanting to play Sat.
In my defence of Saturdays mess I did offer both the fixture secretary (fri afternoon) and the chairman(sat AM) an opportunity to cancel a fixture given the situation in higher teams and loss of players but on both occasions was told that honouring fixtures was my first priority. Additionally if everybody who had confirmed their availability as at Sat AM had turned up (or not turned round) and I had been available we would have been able to send 14 to stoke and 13 to uttoxeter having already told their captains that we where short and agreed they had sufficient to make up the difference.
However 5 Ashbourne players, 23 Stoke players and 4 uttoxeter players got a game that they would not have got and that needs some recognition. In addition 35 people got a game with contested scrums at 2nd team level. I think we made the best of a very bad job.
My 'job' as Development XV captain is to ensure as many people as possible get involved in the club and are therefore available to the higher teams. This is different to being somone to dump problems on and pinch players from when it goes a bit pete tong on thursday or friday night.
I don't like pointing out problems without solutions so here's mine.
1) Do nothing and moan alot
2) Pick the 2nds/3rds/4ths on merit/commitment basis only with people made aware that missing a week drops them down a team missing 2 weeks 2 teams etc. In addition pick 3 subs per team and then if you end up short its your own problem not mine.
3) (and my favourite) Take our blinkers off and look at what we can achieve if we work hard together. If we share the responsibility of getting early, firm commitment from our players (and refs!!)and encourage every individual to make a commitment to each other, not get p!$$3d on Fri or suddenly be busy doing something else and make them understand just how many people get let down by there actions we can do something special, really put our club on the map, and get the backing from the RFU and/or local council that we deserve to get the facilities we need. The RFU and DDDC don't give two hoots if we win the midlands merit tupperware vase for 4 years on the trot. They do care about 75 people who in addition to there wives, children, freinds and family would vote, or support them if we give them a good time.
Its a numbers game gentlemen and we need to be savvy. If we have any aspirations for our club we need to get more people involved not just create an easy life for the ones already involved(why haven't we got a supporters club?). I've met the NLD guy on the RFU board and he thinks we are the best game in town from a community point of view. Let's show him that we've not got going yet.
Sorry if you felt let down Sat but it wasn't for the lack of trying.

My question regarding whether games can be cancelled has been answered which leaves the problem lying with communication and the commitment of individuals. Now, we've probably all got mobiles so comms should be easy to solve by making sure all necessary numbers are available ('Put the eggs away Granny!').
This leaves individual commitment, of which examples and solutions have both been highlighted.
Sickness, injury, holidays etc are fair enough, as long as they are communicated, but not being bothered is unacceptable. Used to gaol people for that sort of thing back in the day.
This isn't a quuestion of people defending themselves here; it was presented as a discussion, not a witch-hunt and those concerned probably wouldn't have the guts to explain themselves on here anyway. If this makes people take a look at themselves then its been worth it. |

Hang on! If the role of the Development XV Captain is to, and I quote: 'ensure as many people as possible get involved in the club and are therefore available to the higher teams. This is different to being somone (sic) to dump problems on and pinch players from when it goes a bit pete tong on thursday or friday night.' then is there any irony in the said captain being the one getting pinched, thus dumping another team's problems on the 4ths.
Tomituous may have a point. |

| Possibly, but it all depends on what the other options are/were. I'm not party to the bigger picture so I'm not suggesting I have all the answers. Whatever those options are, other players to move up for example, it would be interesting to weigh them up against the Development Squad losing their leadership. |

fair point.
Selection tonight so we'll see what comes out in the wash. It's a shame we don't seem to be able to have this kind of constructive discussion there!! I predict lots of nice words and then same old story thursday friday. I look forward to being proved wrong.
