Here's Bakewell's take on the match last Saturday...
Ashbourne 1st XV 44pts Mannerians 1st XV 21pts
‘Bizarre’ is he only word that adequately describes Mannerians yo-yo form as the season progresses. From a sound performance against a decent Ilkeston side to this in the space of a week is the kind of outcome that would provide fleets of psychologists with case studies for months.
If you looked at the teams from 1 to 15 on a sheet of paper you certainly wouldn’t have had Ashbourne as runaway winners. But look in more detail and the reasons emerge. In terms of fitness Ashbourne had just that little bit more man for man, but the cumulative difference was decisive. Look at the passion shown. Ashbourne clearly wanted this - after two straight defeats last season - far more than Bakewell. And, perhaps most crucially of all, the home side was just more streetwise than the visitors. They played the referee better, they niggled at Bakewell to put them off their stroke and they adapted to deal with Mannerians’ expansive game whereas Mannerians didn’t adapt to deal with Ashbourne.
It started so well for Mannerians though, and they tore into Ashbourne. It looked like a rout was possible as they raced to a 14-point lead in ten minutes thanks to tries from John Moroney and Henry Bagshawe, both of which skipper Ed Hutchinson converted. Then things started to unravel. Josh Bagshawe took a blow to the head, which knocked some sense into him as he left the field, and Ashbourne began playing a controlled game of pick-and-drive to retain possession and keep the ball from the Bakewell fliers. Mannerians seemed about as interested in competing with that as they might about staying in on a Saturday to watch the X Factor, and the home side were soon back in contention with two well worked tries. A third came before the interval and momentum was going Ashbourne’s way.
Mannerians’ started falling prey to injury which added to the debacle. Pearce’s creaking back saw him depart at half time, and during the second period Tom Elsworth and Jake Ward both received mysterious head wounds that the referee never looked like seeing, though luckily a seamstress was on hand to help rebuild them. Ashbourne were now the dominant force at every breakdown, every scrum, every lineout and every 50-50 situation; their kicking was more clinical and their finishing more controlled - and it was as if Mannerians were ready to write it off as a poor do after 50 minutes. Ashbourne meanwhile romped to 44 points with their relentless effort. By now Mannerians had run out of replacements and the loss of Peter Carr to an ankle injury left them with 14 men.
This adversity did rally Bakewell to a small degree and John Moroney created a try from nothing using his explosive pace to beat the whole Ashbourne defence and touch down under the posts, with the captain converting to lend at least an air of respectability to the score. Mannerians will have to show 100% improvement this coming Saturday when to same opponents come to the Showground for a league and Derbyshire Cup double header.
Team: Moroney J; Ward, Wells, Moroney W, Elsworth (Duncan 53); Hutchinson E, Westwood; Pearce (Turner 40), Greagsby, Carr, (Driscoll S 70), Clegg, Spencer, Bagshawe J (Crampton 29), Driscoll D, Bagshawe H.
Scorers:
Tries: Moroney J, (2), Bagshawe H Cons: Hutchinson E (3)

I'd make enquiries as to who wrote this, visit them in the dead of night (ninja/spiderman suit optional), photograph them whilst they sleep and post the nocturnal snaps Royal mail next day guaranteed.
You'd never expect someone to write
"We were ****, we got stuffed"
but you'd expect at least a reasonably reflective report. |
