Match report copyright of Paul Bott:
MELBOURNE U12s 42 ASHBOURNE U12s 14 Ashbourne travelled away on a cold, wet and windy sunday morning to play a very well drilled Melbourne side who, proving there strength in depth had no less than 12 substitutes. The match started well with Ashbourne forwards totally dominant in the scrums, securing good ball for the backs to run but were unable to breach the hosts solid defence finally giving away soft ball for Melbourne to score. Similar circumstances saw Melbourne score another 2 tries to make it 21-0. Ashbourne must take credit for there never say die attitude throughout the match against a team with a 2 year unbeaten record. Strong running from Jake Hulme, Will Nash and Guy Orton gained ground at every opportunity with good support play from Joe Bailey, Brad Lynam and Josh Steadman helped secure good clean ball for the tireless Danny Yates to unleash the backs. Any momentum Ashbourne had was stopped by good spoiling from Melbourne who seem to have spent most of the match offside which the ref turned a blind eye to. Ashbourne, having the downhill advantage in the second half started well with some ferocious tackling from captain James Wroe, Henry Beard and Fullback Felix Lees to stop the hosts from scoring. After some good link up play from Sam Greatorex and Simon Bott getting the ball out wide to winger Chris Coe who intelligently ran inside only to get held on the hosts 22 metre line creating a maul for Jake Hulme to break loose with the ball to score an excellent try. Converted by Greatorex to make the score 35-7. Ashbournes second try came after several phases of play starting from the drop out kick which Will Nash caught cleanly yet again to run straight back at Melbourne and setting up for quick ball out down the line for winger Henry Beard to score in the corner. Converted by Sam Greatorex. Melbourne hit back soon after with another converted try to make the score 42-14. From the dropout Ashbourne, yet again drove forward with some great interplay between forwards and backs, which, for the travelling supporters was a joy to watch. Near the end Henry Beard touched down in the corner for his second try of the match but was unlucky to have it dissallowed. Well done to Ashbourne for another improved performance, especially man of the match Danny Yates who was dynamic throughout. Next match is away at Bakewell meeting at 10.00 TEAM.
